We're moving BatMUD's two main servers from the Data Center in
Leppävaara, Espoo to a new Data Center in Lauttasaari, Helsinki.
Our hosting provider MagentaSites (acquired by Nebula in 2006)
has had some challenges in providing high class routing through
this specific Data Center. While service has been up to par in
the sense of availability, we have seen connections of our
Players getting routed through the Asian countries, even ones
initiated from Finland.
While this issue is being investigated by the carrier, we still
felt obliged to require a move from the current Data Center,
to a more recently built Nebula facility in Lauttasaari. This
connectivity change should give us better links in general, due
to better network positioning. Also latency from countries such
as the U.S. should get reduced by 30+ milliseconds.
As DNS records won't immediately be updated, we have sufficient
hardware already set up at the current Data Center in order to
provide initial connectivity to BatMUD, as soon as the server
hardware has been brought up in the new location. Thus,
connecting to Bat.org or checking www.bat.org should bring
you up to speed at any point after this maintenance operation.
