01 April 2011 (Helsinki) - BatMUD teams up with PETA
Balanced Alternative Techniques Ry together with People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA), a leading animal rights group, have today
launched a campaign to increase the awareness of animal rights and
endangered species among the online community.
The 12-month campaign will feature an "animal-of-the-month" theme,
starting with the April theme of Platypus. Hence, BatMUD will in
April be called PlatypusMud and be accessible on
platypus.bat.org (port 23).
The IP address will remain unchanged.
"We thank BAT ry for taking such a strong position in supporting
animal rights and increasing the awareness of the injustices against
animals.", said a PETA official. "We see this as particularily
important as most online games are about senseless killing of both
exotic and domestic creatures."
"We felt that after 20 years of giving prominence to bats, which are
not a particularily endangered species, we could do some further good
for the environment", said an anonymous BAT ry spokesperson. "We are
also developing the game inline with animal rights and ethical values,
for example by removing meatbased dishes from the cooking skill and
introducing more vegan alternatives to the online restaurants in the
game. We will also restructure the Rangers guild to focus more on
the preservation of wildlife by removing hostile skills from it".
