She smiled all the time,
even when she did not mean it.
Expressing doubt, she smiled,
with squinted little eyes.
"I don't want to be seen as American,"
she professed in her heavy accent.
and smiling profusely (out of place)
"I want pizza," she said,
thinking just like her countrymen.
One time she told me
why she does not wear socks
with her tennis shoes.
"You might as well
stick a big marker on your forehead
that you are an American."
