The structure of a sword makes it ideal for use from horseback. Its aerodynamic blade, combined with its reach and its balance, allows it to strike with even more effectiveness from the saddle. The speed of the mount, combined with the added power of a downwards blow, can cause much more grevious wounds than a soldier on foot could ever hope to do with the same weapon. Assault is the skill used to strike foes with a long bladed weapon while riding. Mastery of mounted combat increases the chance of a second strike.
