Magic has long been used as protection. One such use is the spell which creates an aura around the target that protects them from various asphyxiation spells. This spell also is known by an older name, air shield. While it cannot completely absorb all asphyxiation attacks, it is still able to take the brunt of the attack, perhaps saving the target's life.
