A faithful mount is like a trusted weapon in many respects -- with time, one learns how it moves and reacts, and learns to improve both offense and defense with it. However, they both tend to take damage in combat. Keeping a mount in good condition is just as important as keeping one's sword sharp and one's shield repaired. While not true healers, a knight can soothe an injured mount with his voice, taking away the fear and pain until the wounds have a chance to heal themselves.
