Still the same old floundering at work so I'll skip to last weekend. The first weekend of December is first season shotgun hunting for deer here in Iowa. I go hunting with my Dad, my brother, and about 15 other guys in our group. This year we had pretty good weather, a light snow a few days previous to aid in tracking and moderate temperatures for this time of the year. On the first drive, I was one of the pushers. I saw a few deer, and even had a shot lined up except my brother on the hillside saw the same deer. He started blasting, ruining my shot and the deer lived another day. The second drive I was blocking, and saw a couple deer, and got a couple shots off, but no confirmed hits. I even wounded a coyote that happened by and stopped long enough for me to put a bead on it. The second day (Sunday), I was pushing again, and never saw a single deer. On the second drive, I was blocking near my old spot. When I first got there, I had to pee. So, as I was doing my business, two doe jumped up about 10 yards from where I was and bounded away. I just looked, and kept on whizzing. Like I was going to stumble over to my gun that way. About 10 minutes later, a single doe came into view, stopped broadside, and I dropped her with one shot. Two more does came through, but I missed my one shot. I looked over and saw a buck that looked like it was about to head out of our hunting area. I took a shot, yelled at my brother to get it. Luckily, he managed to get a good shot in and claimed a smaller 8 point buck. So, all in all, it was a good hunt, Dad got 2 doe and a small 6 point buck. It was so small of a rack, Pa thought it was a doe because the ears blocked out the rack. Fortunately, no one was hurt and everyone had a good time including the guy who came all the way from N. Carolina to come hunt with us for the first time this year. A real good guy, I'd love to see him come back again next year. You should see the bruise on my right arm and shoulder though, that old 12 gauge with 3 in. shells delivers some punishment to the body. Shoutout to Garou.
