This is an excellent addition. Writing the entire memory topography to a flat,
structured JSON file not only allows for persistent sessions, but it
effectively turns the savefile into an observable brain state.
If a state machine gets stuck in a logic loop or hallucinates a corrupted
inventory ID, an external LLM (or a human developer) can just open
MACHINE#a1b2c3.state.json, prune the bad keys, fix the references, and tell
the machine to /load. It introduces the concept of "AI surgery" on the state
machine's memory.
Here are the additions to incorporate into the Design Document:
Add to Section 4: Execution Loop & REPL (Commands)
* /save [optional_filename] -> Serializes the current Conceptual Memory,
Inventory, Local Cache, and Identity into a JSON file. Defaults to
[MACHINE_ID].state.json in the current working directory.
* /load [filename] -> Halts the current execution context, parses the
specified JSON savefile, validates the schema, and overwrites the active
runtime memory with the loaded state.
New Section 6: State Serialization & External Repair
6. State Serialization & Extensibility
To facilitate debugging, persistent sessions, and AI-assisted maintenance, the
state machine supports full runtime serialization.
* The Savefile Format: The machine dumps its internal variables as a strict
JSON object. This file represents the absolute truth of the machine's internal
perception at that exact timestamp.
{
"identity": "MACHINE#a1b2c3",
"timestamp": 1790361179,
"conceptual_memory": {
"THE_CUSTOMER": {"last_seen": 1790361100, "hits": 3}
},
"inventory": {

},
"local_cache": {
"CUSTOMER#Zv82q9": {"state": "REJECTED", "last_sync": 1790361150}
}
}
* Hot-Swapping and AI Surgery: Because the savefile is deterministic JSON, it
can be manipulated by external tools while the machine is offline (or before a
/load command). A higher-level reasoning AI can be fed the .state.json file
along with an error trace, identify a hallucinated or orphaned reference,
rewrite the JSON, and seamlessly repair the state machine's memory.
* Snapshotting: By running /save periodically or via a CRON-like trigger, the
system creates versioned snapshots, allowing the state machine to be rolled
back to a previous "sane" state if a conversation or workflow goes completely
off the rails.
