This is a fantastic catch. Look at the /tick output in your second terminal:
[Recent Communications]
(No recent communications)
The parent machine definitely dropped msg_0_init.md into ./agents/ANALYST#6db6c
8/inbox. So why didn't the child's watcher pick it up and log it?
Because in runner.js, the watcher is hardcoded to monitor ./inbox, not the
child's sandbox inbox! When you launched runner.js from the child's directory,
it probably created a new empty ./inbox folder relative to where it was
running, completely ignoring the one the parent created.
The Fix: Contextual Paths
To make the mesh router and sub-agents work seamlessly regardless of which
directory runner.js is executed in, the state machine must define its inbox
and outbox paths based on its current working directory.
We need to update runner.js to pass the correct path to startWatcher().
Here is the quick patch for runner.js. Replace your startWatcher
initialization near the top of the file with this:
/ --- 1. Startup Initialization ---
/ ... (Keep existing startup code) ...
/ --- 2. Initialize Watcher with Contextual Path ---
const { startWatcher } = require('./watcher.js');
const path = require('path');
/ Determine the correct inbox path relative to where runner.js is executing
const currentDir = process.cwd();
const inboxPath = path.join(currentDir, 'inbox');
console.log(`[Startup] Binding watcher to: ${inboxPath}`);
startWatcher(state, inboxPath); // Pass the explicit path to the watcher
/ --- 3. REPL Setup ---
/ ... (Keep existing REPL code) ...
Ensure watcher.js respects the path
Double-check that your startWatcher function signature in watcher.js accepts
and uses this parameter (which it already should, based on our previous
design, but verify it looks like this):
function startWatcher(stateObj, inboxDir = './inbox') {
if (!fs.existsSync(inboxDir)) {
fs.mkdirSync(inboxDir, { recursive: true });
console.log(`[Watcher] Created physical inbox at ${inboxDir}`);
}
/ ... rest of the function
Re-testing the Swarm
If you apply this patch and restart the child REPL inside the
agents/ANALYST#6db6c8 directory, the watcher will bind to the correct folder.
It will instantly intercept msg_0_init.md that the parent left there, parse
the YAML, update its local cache, log the communication from MACHINE#1c40dc,
and you will see it reflected in the next /tick!
