A thief in the night... - Thu 16 Jan 2014
This is a story about intrigue, treachery and the brave souls who stood up to protect the defenseless against the creeping influx of evil.

...

Once upon a time, not too long ago, the idyllic realm was quiet. Monsters had been vanquished in faraway lands, loot had been hoarded and the epic tales of heroic deeds had been celebrated in taverns. Brave adventurers were slumbering in their castles, atop their piles of wealth and treasure. The birds were singing, it was going to be a beautiful spring.

Alas, unbeknownst to our brave adventurers, an old evil had returned. Not yet strong enough to reveal his identity and show himself for the fiend that he was, he instead lurked in the shadows and enjoyed the hospitality of potential future victims. But in his dark mind he spun his twisted plans - the wealth of the realm was to be his!

As the thief in the night that he truly was, he knew exactly where to strike. For indeed, within the realm were castles whose inhabitants had slumbered for a long time on massive piles of treasure, and even a clumsy thief would be unable to wake them. Whatever resistance he met as he made his way to the chest rooms was quickly done away with by a plan so fiendishly clever that only a master of crime could have devised it. Utilizing secret Jedi mind tricks he convinced the guards that indeed *he* was the master of the dwelling. And thus the guards let him pass and doors stood ajar, and soon the thief found the treasures he was looking for.

Now, at the sight of such massive hoards of treasure a lesser thief would have been overwhelmed with greed and unable to control themselves, they would have stolen it all. Obviously such a massive shift in wealth would not have gone unnoticed by the powers of the realm, and our antagonist knew this all too well, having previously been caught in the act. But this time he would not make the same mistake, and instead pocketed only a few items and ran off with them to his lair. A few evenings later he resumed his path of crime. Darkness and despair was creeping in on the realm.

Meanwhile, not too far away, Kenn Gunn - who had been trusted with responsibility of the upkeep of the majestic stronghold of Kepustan was making his usual rounds - a few rusty pieces of armor on a guard, a couple of swords that needed sharpening - overall things were in good order. Until suddenly he found himself walking amidst a strange mist. Something was afoul he suspected, and he quickly confirmed it as the mechanical defenses in the vicinity refused to accept his command. "This is strange", he thought, "I must consult with the higher powers about these events!"

Archwizard Darol was the first to heed the distress of Kenn, and interrupted his regular game of interdimensional chess in order to help the denizens of Kepustan. Indeed, so fresh an Archwizard was Darol that he still had a soft spot for the mortals of the realm and at times even sought to help them!

At first even Archwizard Darol seemed puzzled by the phenomenon and thus he consulted Archwizard Gore about the matter. Within moments the two of them were deep in thought, pulling and twisting the fabric of reality to understand what was really happening. Eventually one of them said solemnly:

"You have got to be shitting me! Anybody can claim ownership of a room if it has no prior owner. When has this bug crept in, what idiot caused it and how on earth has nobody noticed it until now!?!"

They spoke in code about objects and calls and conditional statements, all of which was too confusing for poor Kenn. So they left him alone and started working on a plan to resolve the problems.

Archwzard Darol, being a master of the code, quickly devised a solution that would push out the darkness and repair the fabric of the castles for all times (or until the next bug).

Archwizard Gore spent the night travelling through time, to watch the fiend as he had snuck into castles to steal treasure. Archwizard Gore made a note of everything stolen, and conjuring up the forces of divine restoration like only a true immortal can, he returned the dwellings to the state they were before the thief entered them.

Concerned that the fiend could have had backup, they dabbled in the dark arts to ensure no other creature had similarly tried to force their way into dwellings. Satisfied that the problem had been resolved, they set out to confront the evil.

The creature had taken on the form of a level 51 female wolfman named Tyrian. A lesser power could have assumed that this furry creature was innocent, but our heroic Archwizards saw through the petty disguise. For this was no other than Glacius, a bastard so vile that still today mothers scare their children that if they are not nice, Glacius will come and steal them with his unstoppable magic tower that floats on water.

The interview took place in a secret backroom in the Arelium Meatpacking Company and at first the creature feigned ignorance. "What items", she said, "I know of no items. The only items I have are the ones I have bought, fair and square!".

But alas, the truth was against her and she soon found herself cornered within her web of deceit and the game was up. Panicking, she tried to flee, but alas she stumbled and fell 20 feet into an industrial meat mincer. The last poisonous words she spat out of her infested mouth were "is this the end.. or just the
beginning".

And thus Tyrian was no more and the evil had been vanquished... but for how long?
